Our Story
Umi Rojo is the new chapter of Chile Rojo, a Puerto Viejo favourite for more than two decades.
Owner-chef Andrew is an Englishman born in Africa. His connection with Asia began while growing up, when he spent two years living in Hong Kong. Later, as an adult, he spent six months in Chiang Mai studying the cuisine and culinary traditions of Thailand.
Andrew's wife, Ikuko Nagasaki, is from Japan. Together, their international backgrounds inspire Umi Rojo's distinctive fusion of traditional Thai and Japanese flavours, creative cooking and fresh local ingredients.
Our varied menu offers fresh seafood, meat dishes, vegetarian and vegan choices, as well as an extensive selection of gluten-free options—so there is something for everyone.
You'll find Umi Rojo at our beautiful new beachfront location on Playa Cocles, beside Playa 506 Beachfront Hostel. Pull up a stool at our sushi bar, relax at one of our tables directly on the beach, or enjoy your favourite dishes through our popular takeout and local delivery service.
